Guo Yunfei 2015-03-19 16:11:59 From:

In an international competition at the end of last year, the opponent dodged, which made Guo Yunfei lose her balance, and she fell heavily to the ground.  From then on, she could no longer move freely.  After the examination, it was found that there were two avulsion fractures in her third transverse process of the lumbar vertebra on the right side.  In layman’s terms, her transverse process of the lumbar vertebra was snapped in an instant by the force of the muscles.

At the first moment after the examination, the national team and the Henan team quickly made a decision to put Guo to rest in bed.  40 days later, when Guo could get up and walk, she knocked on our door to seek help.

At that time, her lower back still experienced uneasiness, and actions such as running, jumping, and kicking remained impossible for her to do.  From x-rays, even though callus had formed in the two fractured areas, there were still wide sutures.  We all know that transverse bones are not only small, but slim and thin, have poor blood circulation, and the bone muscles receive relatively heavy force.  During the recovery period, if the treatment and rehabilitation methods that one receives are not up to standard, the bone cannot heal properly, causing motor dysfunction, or worse, ending this world-class athlete’s future career prospects.  Conversely, the challenges we faced were lying before us: not only did the bones need to be well healed, but also we needed to make sure that her lower back had recovered its agile and powerful lever function.

There was another matter that troubled the national team: due to this injury, Guo Yunfei could not attend any competitions, therefore, her ranking declined, and her accumulated points stood still, which has directly affected her and the Chinese team’s chance to qualify for the Rio Olympics.  From the time we took over, a number of international taekwondo competitions related to accumulated points and ranking came one after another.  In addition, the Asian Games in the second half of the year were also coming...

Carefully breaking through from risks

Precisely because time is tight, we need to remember not to hurry.  After consultation and discussion with various parties, we formed a special rehabilitation team, and created a “three-phase” rehabilitation program for Guo Yunfei.

The first phase: because Guo Yunfei’s avulsion fraction injury was accompanied by heavy internal hemorrhage and adhesions, causing persistent pain, she could not bend over or rotate, so we used a variety of physical therapeutic methods to diminish inflammation and relieve pain, which helped to restore her range of motion.  In the meantime, we invited the team doctor to conduct acupuncture treatment on her head, from which Guo Yunfei got her nickname, “Teletubbie baby”.

The second phase: starting from the simplest mat exercise, we did waist rotating training, strength training, and especially force training from different angles and positions of her lower back.  Its purpose was to restore strength in her lower back, and enhance the stability of the joints.

The third phase: combining with the technical characteristics of taekwondo, we aimed to restore her special ability of taekwondo.

The first two phases were conducted entirely in our studio, and lasted for two months, which included the Chinese Spring Festival.  But the training with Guo did not stop even for one day.  Even we went on a business trip, we took her with us, and I also accompanied her jogging along the river.  During the last phase, we allowed her to rejoin her team to train, but we asked her to come to the studio two or three times each week, and we also went to the team to monitor her training.

In addition, during the rehabilitation therapy, we also noticed that Guo Yunfei’s lower back muscles stiffened easily, the stability of her left leg was poor, and the kicking height of her right leg was not ideal.  This lack of technique indicates that the agility and flexibility of her waist and hips was poor.  Due to this finding, we added content to solve the fundamental coordination problem of her waist and hips and reduce her lumbar load.

The most difficult thing to grasp during practical rehabilitation training is the “amount.”  Because of this, we paid great attention to details, and were extremely sensitive to any minor exceptions.  During a stretching exercise, Guo Yunfei’s lower back suddenly had a snapping sound, which gave us cold sweats.  We were afraid that her bone had fractured again, and immediately checked to see whether she was experiencing any pain or having any movement disorder.  Finally we determined the sound was coming from a small joint in her lower back when it popped back into place.  False alarm.

Guo Yunfei is a girl with strong personalities.  No matter how tough and painful it was during rehabilitation training, she never made a sound.  Just as if she were in the match, she did everything she could to “conquer” any means we used, which made the rehabilitation program go more smoothly.  In the following months, during a series of world competitions and at the Incheon Asian Games, people frequently spotted Guo Yunfei’s smiling face.
