Dr.Bob Chen Sports Training and Rehab Center

“I started sports training at an amateur sports school at the age of six, from weightlifting to swimming, from swimming to water polo, and finally entered a professional sports team.  Family, the influence of society, as well as my school education helped me to lay a very solid foundation for sports.  At that time, my uncle was a sports injury specialist in Chinese medicine orthopedics, and this allowed me to be nurtured in an environment of sports medicine from an early age.  This period had a great impact on my study and work later on.  During my sports career, due to my physical condition and sports injuries, I had no choice but to give up professional sports team training prematurely.

In 1978, as one of the earliest groups of students after the Cultural Revolution, I entered the Beijing Sport University to study.  After graduation, I spent three years working at the Guangxi Sports Research Institute.  In order to pursue more advanced studies and methods in rehabilitation, in addition to witnessing too many athletes and sports enthusiasts lose their sports dreams due to injuries, in 1985 I decided to go to America, and started my long overseas study and work experience.  I received two master's degrees, a dual doctoral degree, and a post-doctoral degree, respectively.

In 1996, I became a professor in the Department of Rehabilitation at New York University, and began to return to the motherland regularly to give lectures on rehabilitation.  In 1997, I started to work for the Ninth Shanghai National Sports Meet, and from then on I was continuously involved with working at the Tenth Guangzhou National Sports Meet, and the Eleventh Jiangsu National Sports Meet.  In 2001, in order to assist with the Beijing 2008 Olympics, I decided to give up America's preferential treatments and life style and returned to China.  In order to cultivate advanced rehabilitation personnel, I created our nation's first MPT Department (Master of Physical Therapy) at Tongji Medical College.  Meanwhile, I worked at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and was committed to promoting the concept of physical rehabilitation.  Then, I participated in the 2004 Athens Olympics and the security and protection work of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  At the end of 2009, I resigned from my faculty position at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and came to Beijing for the development and promotion of physical rehabilitation.”
