Dr. Chen‘s Training system

Training Goal

Dr. Chen’s Elite Physical Rehabilitation Training Course is the results of great demand in Chinese health industry development and markets, such as research institutions, sports teams, rehabilitation centers, fitness clubs, community health and so on, which targets sports injuries, the decline of physical functions and other problems faced by people from all walks of life caused by incorrect sports or long-term working and living, and creates sports rehabilitation specialists who meet the market’s demand.

This professional training team, under the leadership of Dr. Bob Chen, has long-term practical experience methods in the United States, Hong Kong and Mainland China.  The team integrates rehabilitation medicine, sports training studies, functional recovery and the unique biomechanical function evaluation system, provides rigorous inspection, evaluation, and makes their targeted health management prescriptions. They combine both passive and active rehabilitation ranges, so that the clients can restore their health, and enjoy high-quality sports and life.

Training Purpose

We want to create hands-on professional individuals who have abilities in theoretical and practical solutions.  Our slogan is “Not only certified, but truly qualified!”

We require every student of ours to become a “Four Ability” person upon graduation.  These are “say” (be able to communicate effectively one on one), “write” (be able to write professional documents as part of the diagnostic evaluation process), “do” (be able to really solve patients’ problems), and “teach” (be able to pass on the knowledge and experiences to others).

Training Background

In the past several decades, physical rehabilitation has been promoted and developed.  Physical rehabilitation is a comprehensive discipline that involves basic medicines, various clinical medicines, sports rehabilitation studies, biomechanics, training, psychology, and other disciplines.  For a physically injured patient (athlete or non-athlete) who needs to undergo an operation, the surgery to him/her is only the first step of the healing and the recovery.  In order to improve his/her quality of life or enable him/her to return to the arena, follow-up rehabilitation is essential.  It is obvious that many overseas countries focus much attention on post-operative rehabilitation because to these rehabilitation specialists, the importance of rehabilitation treatment and training has reached a general consensus, which is from the start of the surgery to the final stage at which the patient is able to have a higher quality of life (or return to the arena and achieve their goals).  The operation only accounts for one-third of the whole process; the other two-thirds are rehabilitation treatment and training.  This really indicates the importance of rehabilitation in the process of treatment.

With the huge success of China’s nationwide Olympic gold medal strategy, as the highest administrative unit in the country, the State Sports General Administration has increased funding and efforts each year to support gold medallists, and for every event, the national team focuses more and more on the physical training and injury rehabilitation of those teams or individual athletes who are likely to medal.  On one hand, they hire overseas physical rehabilitation specialists with advanced rehabilitation experience to join the team to train with them; on the other hand, they spend a fortune sending athletes overseas to receive surgery and rehabilitation treatment, and the investment is evident.  After the professional athletes have experienced the mature, scientific and complete physical rehabilitation training available overseas, their sports performance has improved.  From the objective point of view, this has also increased their dependency and demand for sports rehabilitation specialists.  In some sports, with relatively high degrees of professionalism, such as tennis, basketball, soccer, etc., athletes even hire professional rehabilitation specialists for one-on-one training at their own expense.  But looking at China’s physical rehabilitation industry, we have not yet attained a sufficient level of rehabilitation personnel with basic medical theory and rich experience in clinical practice that can meet the demands of physical rehabilitation treatment for various national and local sports teams.

Trainer’s Background

In 1996, Dr. Bob Chen became a professor at the Department of Rehabilitation at New York University, and later on he taught at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  More than ten years of teaching experience at home and abroad has laid a solid foundation for his own education and training career.  From the year 2011, in order to meet society’s demands, Dr. Chen, as the main organizer of the course, has cooperated with the State Sports General Administration and opened a physical rehabilitation training course designed specially for retired athletes.  However, due to the limitations of retired athletes, a large number of related professionals could not participate.  After a series of targeted special training organized for provincial and municipal sports rehabilitation centers, in 2014, “Dr. Chen’s Elite Physical Rehabilitation Training Course,” directed by Dr, Bob Chen, was opened to the general public, which has spread the physical rehabilitation concept more widely.

Students’ Employment

Almost all students work in physical rehabilitation related fields after graduation, including sports teams, sport science institutes, hospitals, universities, clubs, private clubs, fitness centers and so on.  Some students perform well during their internship, and they get hired by the places where they are doing their internships even before graduation; some students have signed contracts with related fields before participating in training, and the premises are getting the certificates; some students want to go back to their previous working places and move up to a higher level after training; and some students create their business through their own efforts after graduation.

Students’ Voices:

Wei Xiao-wei (First term student of Dr. Chen’s Elite Physical Rehabilitation Training Course): “Education is the bronze medal, ability is the silver medal, connection is the gold medal, and thinking is the trump card!”

Qu Zhi (Second term student of Retired Athletes Physical Rehabilitation Training Course): “From the time I became a student of the Physical Rehabilitation Training Class on October 15, 2012, leading up to now, in over a year’s time, my classmates and I have not only learned highly practical coursework and knowledge, elaborately arranged by Dr. Bob Chen and his curriculum section, but also had two chances for internships working with first line sports teams, and gained great benefit.  The second team students have gone to their posts; they will put the knowledge and the skills they have learned fully into practice, and they will be carrying and passing on Dr. Bob Chen’s work ethic of seeking for ever greater perfection.”

Han Chen (First term student of Retired Athletes Physical Rehabilitation Training Course): “Thank you, Dr. Chen and all the teachers for passing on this precious knowledge.  In the past year of learning, we have mastered the valuable skills of helping people who are in need.  But I know that the road of learning is long, and only when we continue to work hard, learn and practice, can we benefit more people with physical rehabilitation.

Training Features

Innovative theoretical learning methods
The training starts with Dr. Bob Chen’s proposal of the system of physical rehabilitation theory.  Based on years of clinical experience, Dr. Chen has summarized the term “Ti Neng Kang Fu” (Physical Rehabilitation) as follows:  “Ti” is for body, “Neng” is for function, “Kang” is for health, and “Fu” is for recovery or restoration.  He advocates the term “Ti Neng Kang Fu,” and indicates that practice is the most essential thing of all.  This means that while Dr. Chen is laying the solid foundation for physical rehabilitation training, he strongly encourages all trainees to participate in practical operations.

High platform of internship opportunities
Because all our instructors are “coming from practice to practice,” we provide internship opportunities covering the front lines of the National Teams, Beijing as well as the provincial and municipal sports teams.  Through our complete and rigorous training system, we create first-rate physical rehabilitation specialists, who have the ability to provide physical rehabilitation training for professional athletes.  Every one of our instructors has been involved in cooperative activities with the State Sports General Administration.  The internships we provide are the best prerequisite for trainees’ future front line working opportunities, and are also a rare chance for them to be able to participate personally in the major events of the National Sports Meet, the Asian Games, or even the Olympic Games.  During the internship period, the first term students of the Retired Athletes Sports Training and Rehabilitation Course provided sports training and rehabilitation services for 343 national team athletes, and among them were Lin Dan, He Wen-na, Dong Wen, and other top, world-famous athletes who are from the National Badminton Team, Trampoline Team, and so on.

 Standardized practical teaching operation
In order to manage the training better, we require our students to participate in full-time study and the centralized teaching system.

Practical style of teaching
Compared with the theoretical knowledge of textbooks, we pay more attention to practice.  Half a day of theory, half a day of practice, plus the weekly internship opportunities will allow students, in the shortest possible time, in the most efficient way, to digest and absorb the theoretical knowledge that they have learned daily.  So when facing the more complex reality, students will be able to cope with ease.

Case analysis-based teaching mode
Dr. Chen and his team members have put into books the cases of many gold medal athletes they have treated, such as Zhang Ning, Wang Meng, Zhu Fangyu, Zhang Lin, and so on, and have gathered their injury analyses and solutions, and passed these on to the students.  They have taught their students how to solve problems in real life, and truly realized the saying “practice makes perfect.”

Curriculum

The length of Dr. Chen’s 3+3 Elite Training Course is six months.  The classes will be held at Dr. Chen’s STaR Studio.  The first twelve weeks’ theory study includes “combat-style” training in assessment, prescription, implementation, and feedback for major motion injuries, a total of nine courses.  The following twelve weeks of practical training includes sending trainees to various sports teams to practice.  There they will be responsible for their work related to physical rehabilitation training.  Students will learn by participating in comprehensive “TSM” (short for sports training, scientific research and medicine) of athletes, coaches, doctors and physical therapists.  The instructors will regularly tour around, help troubleshoot problems, and organize seminars.  The final report for graduation requires students to combine their typical individual cases of physical rehabilitation services during the internship period, and report their work to their trainers.
