Huang Wenyi is not only a master in the Chinese golf world, but also a rather legendary figure. In order to alleviate the burden on his family, as a child he became a caddy at a golf course in Guangdong, and the dream of becoming a professional golfer was thus generated.  Outside of work, he practiced hard.  Later on, not satisfied with the course regulation of hitting 1,000 balls a day, he actually spent his half-year savings getting a membership card to practice.  Many years later, he finally got onto the national team, and now he ranks No.2 in China.

Due to years of hard training, his shoulders often experience discomfort.  After the examination, I discovered that his upper body, including the muscles of the torso, was very powerful.  But when he performed full back swing actions, the range of motion of his right shoulder experienced difficulty.  When the training load was increased, especially when expanding the shoulders or rotating the wrist, rotator cuff muscle impingement syndrome then occurred, which caused tendonitis of the supraspinatus muscle.

Experience has proven that the limitation of shoulder mobility cannot be due just to one reason.  Therefore, we continued our investigation along its kinetic chain, and found that when he swung, he over-rotated his head, while the rotation rate of his trunk was relatively small.  His body movement was obviously not up to the ideal standard of golf playing, which suggests that we maintain stability in head and use the torso as an axis on which to rotate.  This had a lot to do with the lack of flexibility of his lower back and torso, which had increased the load on his shoulders.

In the training sessions that followed, we also observed that his shoulder joints were different from those of most players: his large muscle groups were quite developed, but his small muscle groups deep down, such as rotator cuff muscles, were relatively weak.  His body joints were rather stiff; therefore, he carried out flexibility exercises such as leg stretching, with tenacious perseverance.  Even though he can do the splits like martial arts athletes, the flexibility of some common joints in his body, such as the shoulders and lower back, has not met the requirements of this sport, and this is why the problem occurs.  This problem was particularly apparent later in matches.  Due to fatigue and increased levels of muscle pain, his technical stability was greatly affected, and the development of his career was also restricted.

After all aspects of the problem were clear, we developed a one-month rehabilitation-training program.  At the beginning, we concentrated mainly on strengthening his core base endurance, including biking and other aerobic exercises designed to improve his body control ability when fatigued.  Then, we worked on strengthening the stability of his innervations of the body.   Later on, using dynamic traction methods, we helped to improve the flexibility of his joints, physical coordination, agility, balance, speed, and other qualities.  Based on the characteristics of a golfer who holds his breath at the moment of hitting the ball, coach Ren also arranged activities associated with psychological adjustment, such as heart rate regulation, breathing, enhancement of his ability to focus attention, and the development of force.

A month later, the range of motion of Huang Wenyi’s shoulders and waist was greatly enhanced; the pain was significantly reduced; the coordination of movements, aerobic endurance and stability of swing were also improved.  He went abroad to participate in competition shortly thereafter.
